ATTENDANCE & GRADE POLICY FOR AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

ATTENDANCE & ATTENDANCE CODES
If you miss an activity or sports practice, you are expected to make up the missed session by doing a make-up run (see below).
An unexcused absence - in which you are not present for your activity - is recorded as an "A" (absent) in PowerSchool. If you were absent because of a health-related reason, the Health Center will determine weather you are excused or if you have to make up the absence with a make-up run.

  • The attendance code "A" (Absent) means that you were not present for your activity. You will have to do a make-up run to excuse this absence

  • The attendance  code "H" (Health center) or "D" (Doctor's visit) means that the health center is excusing the student for a more severe illness or long lasting injury, or a doctor's appointment.

  • A's recorded in attendance will count as unexcused absences for missed activities.

  • Students who miss an activity to attend extra help or make up a missed exam are expected to make up the missed activity with a make-up run.

One (1) or more absences (A's) qualifies as a failing mark for Activities and is displayed as an "F" in your PowerSchool account. The final grade is recorded on your school transcript and the grade affects your grade point average (GPA). PUNISHMENT FOR MISSING ACTIVITIES

1 or 2 absences (A ) - Failing mark for activities and loss of weekend travel permission
3 absences (A) - all of the above, plus a 2hr early check-in and a letter sent to your parent

4 absences (A) - a night in the dorm (4 hrs)

5 or more absences (A) is an additional Saturday clipboard and a chat with the Dean of Students.

MAKE-UP RUN - 4:00pm on Friday afternoons

  • "A" attendance code absences can be made up by going on a Make-Up Run (meet at 4:00 on Fridays at the Goathouse).

  • One run will erase one missed activity (showing as the attendance code "U" after completion).

  • Once the student is back down to zero unexcused absences, the grade will change to passing again.

When reviewing your absences in PowerSchool, you should click on the number of absences in the current semester (For example, if you have 3 absences, you'd click on the number "3") and from there you will have an explanation of your absences. Remember that only A's are counted for unexcused absences.Students exempt from taking two activities

  • Students who are participating in the theater production (must enroll in activities once the play is over)

Students exempt from taking two activities and are required to take only one physical activity

  • Students in both days of Village Tutoring

  • In the Spring - SENIOR full IB diploma students

  • JUNIORS enrolled in the SAT exam preparation program

  • Students enrolled in 2 days of Choir and/or band

  • Theater students are exempt from activities until the play is over

Students taking IB EXAMS in the Spring

IB students are expected to attend all activities except if they are writing an exam at the time of the activity.  They will be excused on PowerSchool by the BEC Dean's office with an "E" code - for exam.

GRADESStudents will earn grades based on the performance of their activities, either A, B, C D or F. These grades have a point value and will affect your grade point average (your GPA).

The highest grade a student can get for their activities grade is an A (97%).

Activities grades are entered as letter grades (se below).

If you have an "A", the 97% point value does not lower your GPA if it 4.00 or higher, as this is the highest grade one can get for activities.

A = shows up on time, displays good behavior and participates fully in the activity

B
C = showing up late or leaving early, poor behavior, complains, inadequate participation

D
F = missed an activity with an unexcused absence or a missed for a health reason

A failing mark will be entered by the Activities staff if you have an unexcused (A). When the absence is made up by going on a make-up run or cleared by an administrator, the student is eligible for a passing grade again.

Your grades for two or more activities are averaged together each week. The weekly averaged grade is averaged with all other preceding weekly grades. Your most recent Activities Grade is therefore an average of all your activities grades up until the most recent update.

A student must attend a minimum of two-thirds (2/3's) of the enrolled activities to receive a grade.

A student missing one-third (1/3) or more of the total possible activity sessions in a semester with excused absences will not receive a grade for activities.

A student with any unexcused absences will receive a failing mark for activities unless the unexcused absences are made up.
