LAS at Swiss Indoor Rowing Championships

in Zug on January 31st

Now that rowing is a school sport, LAS students are taking competition seriously.  No better place to test oneself than the Swiss Indoor Rowing Championships, the key national event on Concept 2 rowing machines with 450 participants battling it out before an audience of over a thousand.

The tension is massive in the lead up to a start of a race – there are forty rowers poised in their start position all waiting nervously as the count down booms out round the silenced hall.  A huge roar goes up from the start to finish of the race as supporters watch progress on a huge screen behind the competitors.  Some races are too close to call.

It certainly became an experience never to be forgotten for athletes Alexander S, Alessandro B.F.D.C and Meagan M.B who represented the school in the Under 19 boys and girls categories. Racing over a 2000 metre course they were amongst the bright young hopefuls vying for national selection. The U19 boys were divided into two categories as there were 63 starters.

Alessandro went in the first group and recorded his best time 7'23”, over 10 seconds faster than his previous best.  Alex went in the advanced category and recorded 6'51”, 3 seconds off his personal best.

Meagan joined 35 other U19 girls in her first indoor rowing race and recorded a time of 9'25”.

The next indoor rowing event is March 8th in Vevey for the Suisse Romande Championships and LAS will be fielding athletes in both individual and team events.

Invitational Event

The LAS Girls Volleyball team had a very successful outcome in the Brillantmont Invitational Tournament this past Saturday and Sunday in Lausanne.

The team won a number of important games on Sunday against LGB and La Chatinaigre, but lost in the bronze medal game to an extremely tough Aiglon College team.  LAS ended up in 4th place out of 7 teams in the A-level group.

Only 6 girls played, which meant there were no available substitutes off the bench.  So it was an incredible physical and mental challenge to play, play, play all weekend (7 matches).  A big thank you goes out to Coach Vic, who gave up her weekend to help support the girls and shared her valuable knowledge about the game with the girl, thanks Coach Vic!  Well done to the girls, what a fantastic acheivement and a great progression from the Fall Volleyball Season!

2015 Swiss Romandie Indoor Rowing Champs - Vevey.

LAS success at Suisse Romande Indoor Rowing Championships

in Vevey on March 8th:

Alex S, LAS Rowing Captain, led by example in Vevey this weekend by winning bronze in the super-competitive Under 19 division of the Suisse Romandie Indoor Rowing Championships.

Racing over a 2000 metre course, the U19 boys were divided into three categories with 28 starters.  Alex soon pulled away from his group and won by over 100 metres in a personal best time of 6'47” which now makes him an elite athlete in the U19 category.

Alessandro B Di C and Alexander K also raced in an U19 division and they both achieved commendable times, Alessandro in 7'24” and Alex 7'55”.

Meagan MB went in the U19 girls' category and astonished everybody watching, not least herself, by leading her group for the first 1000 metres with split times she could scarcely believe!  Inevitably she tired over the next 1000m but still beat her previous best by 34 seconds in a time of 8'51”.  It was clear to all watching Meagan will be winning races before long.

Sai C was our sole representative in the boys U15 category as Gleb M had picked up an injury the day before.  Racing for the first time over 1000m course, Sai had all LAS supporters cheering him on as he finished 2nd in his group and 16th overall in a time of 4'21”.  Asked what he wanted to do next he said “to train much much harder!”

Last to go in the Masters' category was Mark Kolman.  This was a hotly contested group made up of experienced athletes over 28 years old and he put in a superb time of 3'28” which placed him 5th in the group.  A great way to finish off a superb day for LAS.
